SupportEd

Data-based practices to re-engage truant students.

SupportEd, CSC’s flagship program, serves K-12 students in Douglas County, KS, is an innovative, community-based approach to truancy. Our SupportEd model emphasizes rehabilitation and data-based practices to re-engage truant students, divert families from court involvement, and prevent negative life outcomes. We combine the talents and expertise of diverse partners and collaborators in identifying needs, coordinating services, and implementing interventions to get students back on track toward achieving life success.

The sections are: Green - "1:1 weekly meetings to build relationship, teach skills, celebrate progress, help with homework, & more!"; Blue - "Partnerships w/ family, school, & community"; Purple - "Monitor attendance, behavior, & grades"; Red - "Assessment & Intervention"; Orange - "Community resources & services to remove barriers".

We partner with Douglas County Criminal Justice Services-Youth Services (CJS) to implement SupportEd and we collaborate with Douglas County schools, the Office of the District Attorney, Kansas Department for Children and Families, and the District Court.

We implement a functional assessment to determine the root cause of truancy, create an individualized treatment plan, and help families access resources to remove barriers to attendance.

We pair each student with a caring adult mentor who implements interventions, teaches skills, counteracts missed educational and social learning opportunties, creates consistency and structure, bridges communication gaps, and expands opportunties for growth.

On average, SupportEd serves 80 students annual and has a 70% success rate.

The Problem

Truancy is a complex problem with cumulative effects that extend from year to year. The results of missing school are devastating, especially for students, but also for schools and communities.

In Kansas, truancy can lead to legal proceedings under the child in need of care code, where the State can intervene to ensure the safety and well-being of the child by addressing underlying issues.

15 million US students missed so many days at school they were academically at risk.
That’s 30% of all US students.
